18 May T20 is a format where you try your luck time and again and comeback- Sunil Joshi on the decision to give 20th over to Harpreet Brar
The spin bowling coach of the Punjab Kings Sunil Joshi accepted that the gamble to bowl Harpreet Brar in the last over against DC didn’t pay off but such chances are needed to be taken in limited-over cricket.
PBKS lost to DC by 15 runs in match 64 of IPL 2023 at Dharamsala. The loss is a massive damage for Punjab as they may lose the chances of getting into the playoffs of IPL 2023.
The cricket experts said that there was a tactical blunder made by the PBKS skipper Shikhar Dhawan for the decision of playing a slower bowler Brar in the 20th over. The 27-year-old conceded 23 runs off his over to Rilee Rossouw in the last over.
In the post-match press presentation, Joshi explained the strategy for the tough decision:
“We bowled very well, actually. The wicket was true, if you look at the scores from both the sides. I think execution was missing. T20 [is a] format where you try your luck time and again and comeback. [Sometimes] You don’t execute. It is a matter of one good over. That’s the difference.
“Brar and [Rahul] Chahar bowled well, but the third over [from Brar] went for 23 runs, which was crucial. If you look back, the last two overs which fast bowlers bowled, they also gave 17-18 runs. It was a chance; you’ve got to take a chance.”
“When you have a 200-plus score, you’re always catching up with the game. When you have a lean over, scoring less than 10 runs, then you’re catching up with the game for the next over. That made the difference.” Joshi added.
