12 May Revamped Big Bash League with new trimmed structure
Cricket Australia reworked the structure of Big Bash and is expecting an improvement in the experience of fans around the world.
The 13th edition of the Big Bash League will see the tournament shortened to 44 games with CA advancing the alterations to the competition structure that were due to be implemented under the new TV rights deal.
Men’s BBL will revamp to a 44-game season – 40 home and away league matches, and the playoff structure between the top 4 is yet to be decided. The Women’s BBL remains unchanged, with 59 games in total, of which 56 are league games and 3 finals.
“A shortened BBL will allow us greater flexibility to ensure we can deliver the best possible fixture for clubs and fans, while providing a platform that allows players to continue to produce the world-class levels of cricket we’ve seen over the duration of the tournament,” Cricket Australia general manager of Big Bash Leagues, Alistair Dobson said.
Dobson also didn’t rule out the possibility of changes to WBBL structure in the future. “Whilst no changes have been made to the WBBL schedule, it’s vital that we make sure the tournament continues to be at the forefront of T20 Leagues as the global women’s game continues to evolve at a rapid rate. As a League, we’re always reviewing and looking at ways we can evolve, adapt and innovate, and as part of that, we’ll continue to consider the structure of the WBBL season,” he added.
