Rohit Sharma, the Indian cricketer, has indeed been a successful captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He had captained the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise, leading them to multiple IPL titles. His leadership qualities and ability to get the best out of his players have been key factors in his team’s success. Rohit Sharma’s approach of trying to understand his players and their needs is a valuable aspect of his leadership.

By thinking from the perspective of his team members, Rohit Sharma demonstrates an empathetic and player-centric approach to leadership. This can help boost team morale, confidence, and performance.

Leadership styles and approaches can evolve over time  and Rohit’s willingness to learn and adapt to better serve his team is a testament to his growth as a captain. His ability to manage and motivate a diverse group of players is a significant part of his success as an IPL captain.

Speaking to Star Sports, here’s what Rohit Sharma had to say about managing his players:

“I try to put myself in their shoes and think about what this individual will be needing now. So, it’s important to think like that. So, yeah that is something that I wouldn’t say comes naturally to me, I’ve learned it over the years, gone through my personal experiences and understood what is needed for a team to be successful.”

He further added:

“We do understand as well that when you want to win championships, big tournaments, everyone needs to come to the party and play their part. So, it’s important that you keep everyone in a good mental space. So, it’s very important to hear everyone out, understand what they want, how they want to operate.”

Rohit Sharma on the importance of clarity under pressure

Rohit Sharma’s belief in the identification of roles and maintaining a calm demeanor is in line with many successful captains and leaders in cricket. These principles are indeed crucial, especially in high-pressure tournaments like the World Cup.

On this, he stated: “I think what is needed to be successful is to understand everyone’s needs, their requirements and give them that space and freedom to go and execute their job and their roles. It can be quite daunting at times because when you are playing such a high-profile tournament, the pressure can get to you at times.”

India will face England next in Lucknow on October 29, with Hardik Pandya likely to be unavailable for the game due to his ankle injury.
